4 Brilliant ways stores trick you into spending money.
Don't be fooled into leaving with less money in your pocket.
What stared out as a simple "Would you like fries with that?" has turned into a complex system of trickery by retailers to gain huge profits by selling things that you are convinced you need, which in most cases, you don't. Heres the real spin on weither or not the retailers "upsells" are actually worth it.
The buy 1 get 1 half off
Did this ever happen to you? You walk up to a cashier, plop a new dress
or shirt on the counter and the salesperson says "Hey, you know, this is buy one
get one half off!" Immediately bells start going off in your head that you would
be foolish not to take advantage of that, right? You don't want to be a foolish
consumer, do you?
Well, let's pitch it this way... "You can buy this garment for $20 or... You can
buy 2 for 15.00 each". Sounds less sexy, right? How about, "Buy two of these
shirts you already decided you only need one of, and walk out of here spending
$30 instead of $20". Even less appealing, now isn't it?
If your intention is to buy the two items to begin with, then it's a great deal,
but in reality, most people aren't. But pitching it as "getting one half off" is
a strong enough argument to pony up some extra money for those people on the
fence about buying more products. Let's face it though. It's "buy two for $30
instead of, buy one for $20" in the end, you're still paying more money.
